England Lord of Margate
The Lordship of Margate
Margate has a history stretching back to the Bronze Age, but it rose to prominence as one of England's original seaside resorts. In 1736, Benjamin Beale invented the bathing machine here, launching the British seaside holiday tradition. Georgian and Regency aristocrats flocked to Margate by hoy boat from London, making it fashionable decades before Brighton. The town's shell grotto, discovered in 1835, remains one of England's greatest archaeological mysteries.
The lordship system in England traces its origins to the feudal structure established after the Norman Conquest of 1066. William the Conqueror divided England into manors, each governed by a lord who held authority over the land and its inhabitants. Margate was part of this system, with local lords holding manorial rights that included the administration of justice, collection of rents, and management of common lands.
Throughout the medieval and early modern periods, the lords associated with Margate played important roles in the governance and development of the area.
